Student Competitions

The CPRBS and Lockheed Martin Ethics in Engineering Case Competition are annual competitions that challenge students to apply ethics and professional responsibility to real-world business and engineering problems. The CPRBS is open to students from all over the world, while the Lockheed Martin competition is open to students from the United States. Both competitions develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Past Events

This exciting 10th annual event has been developed in partnership with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Gies College of Business, the Center for Professional Responsibility in Business and Society, and BP. The competition case will have numerous and complex ethical and business components facing the energy industry. Nine interdisciplinary teams comprised of students from business, engineering, law and related areas will have the unique opportunity to compete in this all-virtual competition and hear presentations from BP managers.

The 2020 Professional Responsibility Strategy Competition (PRSC) will offer full-time Illinois undergraduates of junior or senior standing, as well as graduate and professional school students the chance to address real-world business problems while specifically focusing on ethical and professional responsibility issues that can potentially span any or all of the functional areas of business – e.g., marketing, finance, logistics, law, and human resources.

This year's case will focus on “energy transition” and the imperative many countries and companies face to reduce carbon emissions and the tradeoffs that entails. Teams will advise an energy company on how to design and implement responsible strategies to reduce carbon emissions and still be profitable. The company is headquartered in a developing country focused on economic growth as well as environmental protection, and the CEO and country president care about both; the CEO must also produce profit for shareholders.

Lockheed Martin Ethics in Engineering Case Competition

Lockheed Martin, in partnership with the Center for Professional Responsibility in Business and Society in the Gies College of Business at the University of Illinois, has collaborated on three annual Ethics in Engineering Case Competitions. The events take place at the Lockheed Martin Headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland, and feature a tour of their state of the art Global Vision Center in Arlington, Virginia.

Competition Objectives

The competition aims to prepare undergraduate students from technical disciplines to face the ethical challenges of the 21st century. To this end, Lockheed Martin will prepare a case with engineering, ethical, and business implications. Each team will receive a brief summary of the case before the competition and be asked to analyze it from a variety of different perspectives and present their recommendations during the competition.

Competition Logistics

Each of the invited schools can bring one team of two undergraduate students and a faculty advisor. Because the case will address an engineering issue, we recommend that at least one of the students be studying engineering. Students of all nationalities are welcome.
